EVIA

Introduction: Evia Island

Another adventure you might want to undertake when taking a break from the thermal springs and beaches, would be to explore Evia Island.

Evia (Euboia) is Greece’s second-biggest island and is connected to the mainland with a suspension bridge into Chalkida, the capital. The island consists of a captivating blend of lush landscapes and enchanting beaches. Situated off the eastern coast of Central Greece, Evia’s elongated form is embraced by the Gulf of Evia and the well-known Evripos Straits

The island’s topography mirrors the diversity of Greece. It features pristine Aegean beaches to the east, mountains, rivers and forests in the interior, and on the west coast you will find the bustling capital, Chalikda/Halkida.

North, South, East, West

In the north, discover pine-clad landscapes and ancient monasteries such as Galataki and Osios David.

Then as you move to the northeast, you are able to not only explore sumptuous beaches, but also medieval towers such as those at Messapia, and Byzantine churches in Avlonas.

Central Evia reveals the alpine realm of Mt Dirfis (left).

Traveling further south, you will encounter the mysterious dragon houses (drakospita), the Ohi Mountains, Dimosaris Gorge, and the archaeological wonders of Eretria. And if that’s not enough, in addition the medieval castles in Aliveri, Stira, and Karystos await.

In addition to all this, Evia also boasts a big chunk of Greece’s 617 blue flag beaches, and also has the best fresh air in the world.

Take The Scenic Route: It’s Worth It

Getting to us from Athens is easy. Should you rent a car in Athens, rather than just driving to Arkitsa and taking a ferry, we suggest you take the long route and pay Chalkida a visit. The capital of Evia is connected to the mainland by a bridge. It is a budget-friendly town and definitely deserves a visit.

The townis charming for many reasons, but some of its allure lies in the mesmerising phenomenon of shifting tides between the New Chalkida Bridge, a cable-stayed suspension marvel which has been connecting Evia to the mainland since 1992.

Besides this, Evia has a rich historical narrative and serves as a melting pot of Greek, Turkish and Albanian cultures. Chalkida is no different. As a result, some village have dialects that are so distinct that even fluent Greek speakers sometimes find them challenging to decipher.

Visiting Chalkida

Turkish and Albanian influences during occupation periods have definitely added an extra layer of cosmopolitan vibrancy to Evia’s identity. Chalkida has not been untouched by this influence which is still visible today. As a result, the city is able to weave together tits own essence with that of the mainland and do so with ease.

When going through Chalkida and waiting to observe the peculiar behaviour of the water passing under its suspension bridge (it changes direction seemingly on a whim every six hours), you will definitely get hungry. So, grab some fresh seafood on the promenade: it is long and lined with cafes and restaurants and the food is always fresh and tasty.

Then, once you have done that and you still have time on your hands, in addition to visiting the House with the Statues, the Archeological Museum and the Mayor’s Hall with its baroque architecture, you may as well also visit Kokkino Spiti (The Red House), which dates back to 1884.
